Title: Real-Time Meta-Level Control in Multi-Agent Systems
Abstract: Open environments are characterized by their uncertainty and non-determinism. Sophisticated agents operating in these environments must reason about their local problem solving activities, interact with other agents, plan a course of action and carry out actions in the face of limited resources and uncertainty about action outcomes and the actions of other agents, all in real-time. Many efficient architectures and algorithms that support these activities have been developed and studied. However, none of these architectures explicitly reason about the consumption of time and other resources by control activities such as scheduling and coordination, which may degrade and agent’s performance. This paper describes work in progress to define and build a meta-level control framework which will account for the cost of making appropriate decisions about these control activities, without consuming significant resources in the process.
